Erythropoietin (EPO), is a large glycoprotein hormone secreted by the kidney which regulates RBC production. This assay is used as an aid in distinguishing primary from secondary polycythemia, differentiating appropriate secondary polycythemia (eg, high-altitude living, pulmonary disease, tobacco use) from inappropriate secondary polycythemia (eg, tumors), identifying candidates
for EPO replacement therapy (eg, chronic renal failure), and evaluating patients undergoing EPO replacement therapy who demonstrate an inadequate hematopoietic response.
