Varicella zoster virus (VZV) is a DNA virus of the herpes virus group that causes chicken pox (varicella) and shingles (zoster). Serological screening of direct health care providers and individuals in high risk groups is needed to avoid spread of infection.
Demonstration of VZV antibodies in a single serum is consistent with immunity. This test should not be used to determine the efficacy of immunization.
