Gamma Glutamyl Transferase (GGT), Serum
Test Code: 296 |
CPT Code: 82977 |
Specimen Type: Serum collected in a yellow-top tube |
Sample Volume: 3.0 mL (1.0mL - min) |
Transport Condition: Refrigerated/ frozen condition |
Specimen Rejection Criteria: Hemolysis |
Methodology: ECLIA |
Special Requirements: No special precautions needed |
Clinical Significance: Elevated GGT is found in all forms of liver disease. Measurement of GGT is used in the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholic cirrhosis, as well as primary and secondary liver tumors. It is more sensitive than alkaline phosphatase, the transaminases, and leucine aminopeptidase in detecting obstructive jaundice, cholangitis, and cholecystitis. Normal levels of GGT are seen in skeletal disease; thus, GGT in serum can be used to ascertain whether a disease, suggested by elevated alkaline phosphatase, is skeletal or hepatobiliary.

Glucose Tolerance Test (4 Specimens)
Test Code: 1200 |
CPT Code: 82951 |
Specimen Type: Plasma whole blood in a gray- top (sodium fluoride) tube |

Specimen Rejection Criteria: Grosshemolysis, anticoagulant other than fluoride |
Methodology: Spectrophotometry |
Special Requirements: Follow sample collection procedure for GTT.
Specimen to be collected at Fasting, 1 hr, 2hr and 3hr |
Clinical Significance: OGTT is useful for diagnosing diabetes, insulin resistance, impaired beta cell function, and sometimes reactive hypoglycemia and acromegaly, or rarer disorders of carbohydrate metabolism. For appropriate interpretation of this test, the patient must fast overnight and ingest a 75 g load of glucose in 100 mL of water. Immediately after, a fasting specimen is obtained, followed by collection at 1 hr, 2 hr and 3 hr.

Glucose Tolerance Test (Oral) for Gestational Diabetes (3 Specimens)
Test Code: 1175 |
CPT Code: 82951 |
Specimen Type: Plasma whole blood in a gray- top (sodium fluoride) tubes |
Sample Volume: 3.0 mL (1.0mL - min) |
Transport Condition: Room temperature |
Specimen Rejection Criteria: Hemolysis |
Methodology: Spectrophotometry |
Special Requirements: Follow sample collection procedure for GTT |
Clinical Significance: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with onset or first recognition during pregnancy. A fasting plasma glucose level >126 mg/dl or a random plasma glucose >200 mg/dl meets the threshold
for the diagnosis of diabetes if confirmed on a subsequent day, and precludes the need for any glucose challenge. In the absence of this degree of hyperglycemia, evaluation for
GDM in women with average or high-risk characteristics should follow OGTT. The diagnosis can be made using a 75-g glucose load and the glucose threshold values listed for fasting, 1 hr, and 2 hr.

Transport Condition: Room temperature |
Specimen Rejection Criteria: Grosshemolysis, anticoagulant other than fluoride |
Methodology: Spectrophotometry |
Special Requirements: No special precautions needed |
Clinical Significance: Postprandial glucose levels may be abnormally high in patients with gestational diabetes. If results are positive, and the patient is pregnant, a 3 hour oral glucose tolerance test should be performed for confirmation of gestational diabetes.

Glucose, 2 hr Post Prandial, Plasma
Test Code: 1073 |
CPT Code: 82950 |
Specimen Type: Plasma NaF (whole blood in a gray - top(sodium fluoride) tube) |
Sample Volume: 3.0 mL (1.0mL - min) |
Transport Condition: Room temperature |
Specimen Rejection Criteria: Gross hemolysis |
Methodology: Spectrophotometry |
Special Requirements: No special precautions needed |
Clinical Significance: The 2 hr postprandial glucose test determines glucose levels in blood, two hours after a regular breakfast. It is useful for diagnosis of diabetes, cancers, and metabolic disorders. If the value for the 2 hr postprandial glucose test is between 140 and 200 mg/dL, an OGTT may be performed to confirm diabetes.

Special Requirements: Add 10 g of boric acid as preservative at start of collection. Collect urine for 24 hours. Mix well before taking 5 mL aliquot. |
Clinical Significance: Useful in the screening or management of diabetes mellitus. Elevated urine glucose concentration can be because of hyperglycemia or a defectin proximal tubule function. As a screening test for diabetes mellitus, this test, though, has a
